Jan Villerius

Johannes " Jan" Villerius ( born February 8, 1939 † 7 May 2013) was a Dutch footballer who was active in the Eredivisie for Sparta Rotterdam and ADO Den Haag and once played in the Dutch national team. With Sparta he became Dutch champion in 1959.

Club career

Villerius came from within Xerxes Rotterdam to Sparta, where he made his debut on 21 December 1958 at the away game against Fortuna'54. In the championship season 1958/59 he was more used four times in the Eredivisie. Thereafter, the midfielder played with the Rotterdamern in the European Cup and was in all three quarter-finals against the Rangers in the starting lineup. After three seasons with the " Spartans " in 1961, he moved to ADO The Hague. Here the 22- year-old could be equal to capture a regular place in the first team and made his first season in 34 games. On his first scoring in the Eredivisie Villerius had to wait until 12 January 1964. To the 2-2 draw in Volendam he wore the hit at the intermediate 2-0 guests. The last of his 243 games in the Eredivisie ( 37 for Sparta, 206 for ADO) was the game against DWS Amsterdam on October 8, 1967.

National

Villerius came on 14 October 1962 its only use in the Dutch Oranje. Against Belgium in Antwerp Bosuilstadion Bondscoach Elek Schwartz put him in midfield; The Netherlands lost 0-2. In the following matches - against Switzerland and again against Belgium - he had to make on the bench with the court before he was removed out of the Oranje squad.

After the active time

After his playing career was temporarily Villerius coach of the amateur team of De Postduiven in Rotterdam. In March 2009, his former club Sparta honored him on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the championship.
