Jane Johnson (writer)

Jane Johnson ( born 1960 in Cornwall, pseudonyms: Jew Fisher, Gabriel King ) is a British fantasy author. Jane Johnson worked during her more than 20 -year career as a bookseller, Fiction Publishing Director for the U.S. publisher Harper Collins and now as a children's author.

Life and career

Johnson studied after high school, the Old English and Old Norse language at Goldsmiths College, University of London. After that, she was for a time a lecturer in English and taught for a year Dramatic Arts at North London College. From the Old Norse language, history and literature fascinated she finished a master's degree in Scandinavian Studies at University College London.

By chance, Johnson came into the publisher George Allen & Unwin, which also published works of JRR Tolkien. Within six months she was promoted to publisher's editor. In the 1980s and 1990s, she was responsible for the publication of the fantasy classic The Lord of the Rings. Later, George Allen & Unwin went into Harper Collins. During her time in publishing Johnson worked with authors like Clive Barker, Geoff Ryman, Kim Stanley Robinson, Stephen King and Raymond Feist, George RR Martin and Arthur C. Clarke. During the filming of Peter Jackson's film adaptation of Lord of the Rings book, she attended the film crew in New Zealand. There she worked on film accompanying books they published in the following years under the pseudonym Jew Fisher.

Johnson travels and enjoys hiking. In 2005 she flew to Morocco to do there research on a distant relative who was allegedly kidnapped by Barbary pirates in 1625 and sold into slavery. From the impressions on the spot the book The tenth gift arose. After a climbing accident before she took a life change. Johnson sold her apartment, closed its office in England and moved to Morocco. There she married a local, whom she had met before their failed climb. Now she lives with her husband most of the time in a village in the Anti-Atlas, but at times it also comes back to Cornwall. Johnson continues to work as Fiction Publishing Director for HarperCollins.
