Jang Sun-woo

Jang Sun-woo ( born March 20, 1952 in Seoul) is a South Korean film director. He is regarded as a provocateur, as a bad boy among Korean filmmakers.

Jang studied anthropology at the Seoul National University. During his studies, he played with in a theater group. In 1980 he was arrested for political activities and spent six months in prison. He then became a screenwriter. In 1986 he directed his first movie with a straw man, as of 1988 officially. His non-commercial independent films have won several awards at home and abroad; so won Hwa- om- kyung the Alfred Bauer Prize at the Berlin Festival in 1994. Lies based on a scandal novel, which had brought the authors Jang Jung- Il to jail, was the first Korean contribution in Venice in 13 years.

His most expensive film Resurrection of the Little Match Girl (2002 ), however, was a huge flop, the production company Tube Entertainment was so much loss that tube was taken over by CJ Entertainment to prevent insolvency.
