Janlavyn Narantsatsralt

Dschanlawyn Narantsatsralt (Mongolian Жанлавын Наранцацралт; * 1957 in Ulaanbaatar, † November 12, 2007 in the province of Töw Aimag ) was a Mongolian politician. He was Prime Minister of Mongolia from December 9, 1998 to July 22, 1999.

Life

Early years

Narantsatsralt was born in Ulan Bator in 1957. He was married, had two children, and spoke fluent Russian and English. He studied at the State University of Belarus and the Moscow School of cadastral and land administration, which he completed in 1981. He then studied at the Mongolian State University, where he in 1990 as a PhD in Geographical Sciences acquired. Later he also visited a research institute in India and completed courses of Planning and Economic Management in Japan and South Korea.

After his return from Moscow, he worked as an engineer and property officer at the Department of Land Administration. From 1989 to 1991 he was a researcher and section head at the Institute of Land Policy of the Ministry of Environment. Thereafter he served until 1996 as an expert department head in the Office for Urbanism and Planning of the Municipality of Ulaanbaatar.

Political career

1996 Narantsatsralt was elected mayor of Ulan Bator. The successful work in this office helped him, that he was appointed in December 1998 to the Prime Minister of Mongolia. Due to a controversial letter to the First Deputy Prime Minister of Russia over the Mongolian- Russian copper-molybdenum Erzanreicherungswerk he had eight months later but to resign again.

Other activities

From 1999 to 2000 Narantsatsralt worked as a lecturer and visiting professor at the Mongolian National University, at the Faculty of Geography and Land Management. In the elections of 2000 he won a seat in Parliament, the Great Khural State. Since 2006 he was chairman of the Standing Committee of Parliament. Most recently, he was Minister of Construction and Urban Planning. He died in a traffic accident.
