Janne Salmi

Janne Juhani Salmi ( born April 17, 1969 in Turku ) is a former Finnish orienteers. He was 1997 World Champion on the short distance.

At the 1995 World Championships in Detmold Salmi became Vice World Champion on the long distance behind the Swede Jörgen Mårtensson. In the relay, he won as the final runners along with Keijo Parkkinen, Reijo Mattinen and Timo Karppinen also the silver medal. In the following three world championships he won a total of five medals, including gold in 1997 on the then- short throw distance (now middle distance ). He was in Grimstad, Norway compatriot Timo Karppinen twelve seconds behind. On the long haul Salmi was sixth, with the relay (together with Timo Karppinen, Juha Peltola and Mikael Boström ) behind Denmark in second place. In 1999 he won in Inverness in the sprint bronze behind the Norwegian winner Jørgen Rostrup and Juha Peltola. In the relay ( Jani Lakanen, Juha Peltola and Mikael Boström ) the Finns won silver again, this time behind the Norwegian team. In 2001 he won the gold medal in the relay in Tampere, Finland. In a team with Jani Lakanen, Jarkko Huovila and Juha Peltola the Finns Norway and the Czech Republic referred to the second and third places. In 2003 Salmi one last time at the World Championships and came in the middle distance races to ninth place.

For the Turku Orienteering Club Turun Suunnistajat he started regularly at Jukola Team Event. Three times he won at a Jukkola - season. In addition to his Turku home club, he also belonged to the clubs Bækkelagets SK (1990) and OL Bowlare (1989 to 1995).

Salmi is married to the Swiss orienteer Vroni king.
