János Batsányi

János Batsányi ( born May 9, 1763 in Tapolca, Hungary, † May 12, 1845 in Linz) was a Hungarian poet.

Life

Public servant since 1785, he was in 1794 for "participating in a conspiracy " - imprisoned in the fortress Špilberk - he was one of the Hungarian Jacobins. In 1803 he was pardoned and moved to Vienna, where he worked for a bank. There he married in 1805, the Austrian poet Gabriele von Baumberg.

After Batsányi had 1809 Proclamation of Napoleon translated into Hungarian, he had to bring his sympathy with Napoleon in front of the Austrian imperial authorities in safety, he could find only in Paris. After the defeat of Napoleon Batsányi was delivered to Austria, where he was first detained in Vienna, then in Linz was in exile, while his wife accompanied him. He died there in 1845.
