Janusz Onyszkiewicz

Adam Janusz Onyszkiewicz ( born December 18, 1937 in Lwów ) ​​is a Polish mathematician, mountain climbers, and politicians in the period 2004-2007 Vice- President of the European Parliament.

Life

Janusz Onyszkiewicz has a Ph.D. in mathematics at the University of Warsaw. In the 70s he became a well-known Polish mathematician and mountaineer. He succeeded, among other things, the first ascent of 7946 m Gasherbrum III in 1975 in the Himalayas. In the 1980s he became a spokesman for the Solidarity trade union and reached a particular reputation among foreign journalists through his good English. After December 13, 1981, the state of emergency had been declared, arrested and interned one Onyszkiewicz.

After the end of communism Onyszkiewicz was a member of the Sejm. He was in all legislative periods 1989-2001 Member of Parliament, but for different organizations. Initially, he was a member of the club Obywatelski Parlamentarny, later, the Unia Demokratyczna and ultimately the Unia Wolności.

In spring 1990 Onyszkiewicz Bronisław Komorowski and were appointed as the first civilian Deputy Ministers in Communist- dominated Ministry of Defence. Later Onyszkiewicz itself was twice appointed Minister of Defence: the cabinet of Hanna Suchocka (1992-1993) and by Jerzy Buzek (1997-2000).

In 1999 he received the Manfred Wörner Medal by the German Federal Ministry of Defence.

On 13 June 2004 Onyszkiewicz was chosen as the candidate of the Unia Wolności to the European Parliament and on 20 July 2004 as Vice President of the Parliament. He was also from 2007 to 2009 Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Human Rights, Common Security and Defence Policy.

From 2006 to 2009 Janusz Onyszkiewicz was Chairman of the Liberal Party partia Demokratyczna.
