Style

At Jar of Flies is a predominantly rehearsed with acoustic guitars plate. Similar to Sap, the first acoustic EP of the band, the songs are usually accompanied by drums and bass, and distorted electric guitar solos are heard. But Mostly dominates a calmer mood, though the first single, No Excuses is played a little faster. With Whale & Wasp also an instrumental piece is included. Strings ( I Stay Away ) and background choirs are incorporated in some places. The first piece Rotten Apple begins with a talk box effect. In Do not Follow a harmonica used.

Title

The album title, with a glass full of flies, behind shadowy a child, reflecting on the title refers to a school experience Jerry Cantrell: In an experiment, two glasses were filled with flies, even with food, once without. The students watched as the flies mutually devoured without food.

Genesis

After returning from the Lollapalooza tour in 1993, the band was left without home, because she had not paid the rent, so they lived a long time in London Bridge Studio in Seattle. During this time, Jar of Flies was born. The EP was written in a week and recorded with Toby Wright, who also later produced the next album Alice in Chains. Within one week later, the plate was mixed. In January 1994, she appeared and debuted at number one in the Billboard charts. The single No Excuses got a lot of airplay on American radio. Other singles were I Stay Away ( April 1994 to this, it was like No Excuses a music video ) and Do not Follow (1994). Whale & Wasp was released in January 1995 as a promo single. After the release of Jar of Flies, the band put burned a break and gave no interviews, what the emergence of rumors about drug addiction, Layne Staley particularly encouraged.
