Javier Otxoa

Javier Otxoa Palacios ( born August 30, 1974 in Bilbao ) is a former Spanish professional cyclist and later disabled athletes.

1996 won Javier Otxoa drove the overall ranking of the Circuito Montanes and 2000, the Prueba Villafranca de Ordizia. He twice competed in the Tour de France; Tour de France 2000, he won the ninth stage, a difficult mountain stage from Dax to Lourdes - Hautacam, 42 seconds ahead of Lance Armstrong, finished second in the overall standings and 13th in the mountain classification place.

In February 2001, Javier and his twin brother Ricardo were approached in the street by a car training. Ricardo was killed instantly, Javier was in a coma for 65 days, including with serious head and lung injuries. Since then, he suffers from permanent brain damage and balance problems.

In 2003, he won a total of seven medals, including two European titles at the European Championships in the Czech Teplice disabled. Javier was also successful at the Paralympics in Athens in 2004, when he won gold in the time trial and silver in the individual pursuit on the track .. The medal was dedicated to his late brother and his mother. In the summer 2008 Paralympics he won again two medals: gold in the time trial and silver in the road race.
