Jay Gould II

George Jay Gould II ( born September 1, 1888 in New York City; † January 26, 1935 in Margaretville, Delaware County, NY ) was an American athlete.

He won the only official competition in Olympic history in the sport of Jeu de Paume, a non-return game, which is considered the precursor of modern tennis at the Summer Olympic Games in London in 1908. Only at the Games in 1924 in Paris and 1928 in Amsterdam belonged to the Jeu de Paume as a demonstration sport once more to the Olympic program. In addition to his Olympic victory Gould was from 1914 to 1916 world champion and 1906 to 1925 continuously American amateur champion in this sport.

George Jay Gould II was married and father of one son and two daughters. His grandfather was the railway entrepreneur Jay Gould. He died from the effects of esophageal bleeding.
