Jazz Institute of Chicago

The Jazz Institute of Chicago ( JIC ) is an existing since 1969, Institute for the Development of jazz in all its forms in Chicago, one of the traditional homes of jazz.

There is much involved in the organization of the Chicago Jazz Festival ( 1979 ) and also hosts other concert series, an annual club tour, Jam Sessions at the Chicago Cultural Center and the festival Millennium Park ( in Millennium Park ), Jazz Fair ( 1979 ) and Jazz city (from 1997, of the entire city scattered concerts in collaboration with the Chicago Park District ). One focus is on youth development and education ( Jazz Links Education Program from 2003 in collaboration with music teachers in Chicago).

In 1999, the Chicago Composers Project. At one and two days later in January they host a Jazz Fair ( with stalls, films, concerts ).

His archive is at the University of Chicago. The Institute is funded through donations and companies like Boeing are among the sponsors.

It was founded in 1969 by a group of musicians, club owners, jazz fans and jazz journalist: Art Hodes, Muhal Richard Abrams ( one of the founders of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians in Chicago ( AACM ) ), Harriet Choice (Chicago Tribune music critic ), Joe Segal (owner of the Jazz Showcase clubs), Bob Koester (owner of Delmark Records), Don DeMichael ( drummer and publisher of down Beat, died in 1982, according to him, the archive is named), Penny Tyler ( Jazz Promoterin ) and some others. DeMichael and Tyler were at times also president.

The Institute has partnered with poses, where since 2005 held a four-day Made in Chicago Jazz Festival.
