Jean-Baptiste Arban

Joseph Jean -Baptiste Laurent Arban ( born February 28, 1825 Lyon, † April 8, 1889 in Paris) was a French composer and cornetist.

Life

Even as a small boy he was always interested in music, especially in military bands. After attending a course on music theory, he opted for the Cornet (French: cornet à piston ) as his study instrument. He studied at the Paris Conservatory from 1841 to 1845.

He was first chosen in 1857 to act, then the only military music school in France as saxhorn instructor at the École Militaire in Paris. The instrument, which gave him fame, namely the cornet à piston, was developed in 1842 by Adolphe Sax. 1864, when he published his now world- famous La grande méthode complète de school cornet à piston et de saxhorn par Arban for the first time, he had already ascended to the École Militaire to the professor. In 1869 he became professor of cornet à piston at the Conservatory of Paris.

Besides the aforementioned school, he has left as a composer some showpieces for trumpet or cornet, all the performers demand a great virtuosity.
