Jean Baptiste François Pitra

Jean -Baptiste -François Pitra OSB ( born August 1, 1812 in Champforgeuil at Autun, † February 9, 1889 in Rome ) was a Cardinal of the Catholic Church.

Pitra was born in Champforgeuil. In 1836 he was ordained a priest, from 1835 to 1840 he taught at the seminary of Autun. In 1842 he entered the Abbey of Solesmes.

Pitra was an outstanding patristic scholar, but above all connoisseurs of Eastern Canon Law and the Orthodox liturgy. He was also the main staff of Abbé Jacques Paul Migne in the development of the series patrologischer writings. In Rome, he became an adviser to the Propaganda Congregation for the Oriental Churches questions. Pope Pius IX. appointed him on March 16, 1863 Cardinal. In 1869 he became cardinal librarian of the Roman Church. In 1879 he became Cardinal Bishop of Frascati ( Tusculum ), 1889 Cardinal Bishop of Porto.

Important are his discoveries, including the inscription of Autun, as its archaeological and patristic writings.
