Jean Becker (Violinist)

Jean Becker ( born May 11, 1833 in Mannheim, † October 10, 1884 ) was a German violinist.

A native of Mannheim Becker ( occasionally to be found as the birthplace Hochspeyerdürfte not apply ) took over in 1854 the role of the concertmaster of the Mannheim court theater. In 1858 he was appointed chamber virtuoso to the Grand Duchess Stephanie of Baden. Becker undertook concert tours throughout Europe and was there among other things active in Paris, London and St Petersburg. In 1865, he founded the Florentine Quartet, with whom he also traveled through Europe.

Becker lived in a villa on the Neckar, which had its own concert hall. Here he organized concerts every Sunday in front of a large audience. The character played by Antonio Stradivari violin made by him in 1685, bears the name Ex Jean Becker. He left several compositions, a Serenade for violin, cello and piano.

In Mannheim, it was built in honor in 1886 by Karl Friedrich Moest a monument in the garden of the castle, which no longer exists. In addition, Jean -Becker - street was named after him in 1893.

He was married to Berta Seib ( 1833-98 ). In his quartet concerts beside him had with his children Hans, Hugo and Jeanne. His son Hugo Becker was a cellist and composer. There is a plaque at the birthplace S2, 8, Jean Becker- house in the center street no longer exists. On his grave in the main cemetery Mannheim is an epitaph of yellow sandstone with Ohrenrahmung, a segmental arch coronation and shell ornaments. On the signature panel in black, polished granite is the inscription "Love is stronger than death ."
