Jean Canfield

Ella Jean Canfield ( born October 4, 1918 in Westmoreland, Prince Edward Iceland ) is a former Canadian politician ( Liberal Party ).

Canfield was the first woman who was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Iceland, and the first who belonged to the provincial government. Canfield first appeared at the time of the 1966 election in the district 1st Queens, but lost against Frank Myers. In 1970, she stepped in again and was successful. In 1974 she was re-elected, but was defeated in 1979. From October 10 1972 to 2 May 1974 she was Minister without Portfolio and Minister responsible for the " PEI Housing Authority " in the reign of Alex Campbell. In 2005, the Canadian government announced that a new office building in Charlottetown is named after her.
