Jean-Charles Alphand

Jean -Charles Alphand ( born October 26, 1817 in Grenoble, † December 6, 1891 in Paris), also known as Jean -Charles Adolphe Alphand, was a French Engineer of the " Ponts et Chaussées " ( civil engineering office), urban planners and garden designers.

Life

He was instrumental in the revolutionary urban renewal of Paris,. Upon request of the Emperor Napoléon III was carried out under the direction of Georges -Eugène Haussmann, the then prefect of the department Seine, 1852-1870. Also involved in this project were the architect Gabriel Davioud, the engineer Eugène Belgrand (1810-1878) and the landscape architect Jean -Pierre Barillet - Deschamps ( 1824-1873 ). After Haussmann had been dismissed at the beginning of 1870 his office, Alphand was entrusted with the management of the works and could therefore - with Belgrands support - continue the work of Haussmann. After the death of Belgrand (1878 ), he also took over the management of the "Service des Eaux " ( departments of the waterworks ).

Jean -Charles Alphand died in Paris in 1891, the same year as the Baron Haussmann. His grave in the Père Lachaise Cemetery is decorated with a bust (1891 ) by Jules- Félix Coutan ( 1848-1939 ).

He was honored by the award of the Legion of Honour and an impressive monument (1898 ), which was created by Jean -Camille Formigé and Aimé -Jules Dalou and placed on Avenue Foch in Paris, in the scale of Alphand Bois de Boulogne leads.
