Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant

Jean -Joseph Benjamin -Constant, actually Jean- Joseph Constant, ( born June 10, 1845 in Paris, † May 26, 1902 ) was a French painter and graphic artist ( etching ).

Life

Constant - known as the Benjamin -Constant - 1847 half-orphan. Since his mother had died, he came to Toulouse ( Haute- Garonne) to his aunts. There he was at the École des Beaux -Arts (EBA), a pupil of Jules Garipuy. With their support, he came back to his hometown in 1866 and was taught there, inter alia, by Alexandre Cabanel at the EBA.

Together with his friend and colleague Georges Clairin undertook Benjamin -Constant 1870 a study trip to and through Spain. When after the Franco-German war the situation had improved, he undertook - back together with Clairin - an extended trip to and through Morocco.

1888 appointed one Benjamin -Constant as the successor of the late Gustave Boulanger at the Académie Julian and five years later took him to the Académie des Beaux -Arts as a member. During these years took Benjamin -Constant several times at the major annual exhibitions of the Paris Salon in part and in 1896 awarded with a Medal of Honor.

Jean -Joseph Benjamin -Constant died 15 days before his 57th birthday on 26 May 1902 in Paris and found his final resting place.

Reception

The impressions of his trip to Spain and be a role model Eugène Delacroix can be detected from Benjamin Constant's early works. But at least with his pictures that were taken during his stay in Morocco or thereafter, Benjamin -Constant is an important representative of Orientalism in France.

Regardless of this, he was soon a sought-after portraitist. He was also decorated several times in collaboration with colleagues important public spaces.
