Jean-Pierre Roth

Jean -Pierre Roth ( born April 28, 1946 in Saxon ) is a Swiss economist. He was 2001-2009 President of the Board of the Swiss National Bank.

Jean -Pierre Roth studied economics at Geneva's Graduate Institute of International Studies ( HEI), where he graduated with a doctorate. He then completed advanced studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States and taught at the University of Geneva and at the Institute HEI.

Roth's entry into the Swiss National Bank took place in 1979., Where he worked in various areas in Zurich and Bern operates. He was elected by the Federal Council to the Vice President of the Executive Board in 1996 and took over this function in the management of Department II in Berne, which is responsible for the areas of capital markets, banknotes, business with the federal government and administration of the gold holdings. 2001 Roth was elected by the Federal Council as the successor of Hans Meyer as Chairman of the Board and became Chairman of Department I in Zurich, which is responsible for the areas of economics, international affairs and law and services.

In addition, Roth was Swiss Governor of the International Monetary Fund ( IMF) in Washington and from 2006 to 2009, President of the Board of Directors of the Bank for International Settlements ( BIS) in Basel. From 2007 to 2009 he represented Switzerland also in the Financial Stability Forum.

On February 27, 2009 Jean -Pierre Roth announced plans to take early retirement at the end of 2009.

Roth is married and father of three children.
