Jean-Pierre Wintenberger

Jean -Pierre Wintenberger (* 1954 in Neuilly -sur -Seine ) is a French mathematician who deals with arithmetic algebraic geometry and number theory.

Wintenberger studied from 1974 at the Ecole Normale Superieure in Sevres. He was from 1978 to 1991, scientists from the CNRS at the Institut Fourier in Grenoble, where he ( Thèse de 3eme cycle) or 1984 ( Thèse d'État ) with Jean -Marc Fontaine received his doctorate in 1978. From the late 1980s he was at the University of Paris-Sud in Orsay. He is at the University of Strasbourg, where he is a member of IRMA Institute ( Institut de Recherche Mathématique Avancée ) since 1991 professor. In 2000 he was a visiting scientist at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. 1997 to 1999 he was Director of the UFR de Mathématique et d' Informatique in Strasbourg. Since 2007 he is member of the Institut Universitaire de France.

From 2004 he was involved with Chandrashekhar Khare on proof of the Serre conjectures in number theory. In particular, he proved with Khare a special case, which has the Fermatvermutung result (which is also independent Luis hallway Fait proved ). He wore about November 2005 on the Bourbaki seminar before ( Exposé n ° 956).

The Jean -Pierre Serre in 1972 established assumptions, the two-dimensional representations of the absolute Galois group of number fields with modular functions bring in context, play an important role in number theory and especially in the Langlands program and have, among other things (such as Serre recognized ) on the Andrew Wiles and Richard Taylor and other proven Modularitätssatz the Fermatvermutung result.

In 2008 he received ( the first recipient ever) in 2007 donated Prix Thérèse Gauthier of the French Academy of Sciences, where he was portrayed as one of the leading specialists in the application of p- adic methods in algebraic geometry ( partially in collaboration with Jean -Marc Fontaine with which he developed in 1979 a theory named after them as "standards " body ). In addition to his work with Khare on the Serre conjecture he was awarded the prize for fundamental contributions over Tannaka properties of motifs. In 2011 he was awarded with Khare the Cole Prize for number theory.

In 2010, he was with Chandrasekhar Khare Invited Speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Hyderabad ( Serre 's Modularity Conjecture).
