Jean Schneitzhoeffer

Jean -Madeleine Schneitzhoeffer (* October 13, 1785 in Toulouse, † October 4, 1852 in Paris) was a French composer. His ballet La Sylphide (1832 ) is considered the first romantic ballet music history.

Life

Schneitzhoeffer studied at the Conservatoire de Paris at Charles -Simon Catel and 1803 was awarded a second prize in piano. From 1807, he headed a class of solfège at the Conservatoire and joined in 1815 as timpanist in the Paris Opera a. In 1823 he was appointed there to boss you chant. 1831 to 1850, he led a choir training class at the Paris Conservatoire.

Work

Schneitzhoeffer composed orchestral works and a requiem. He left behind four complete ballet music (as well as parts for other ballets ), which was commissioned by the Paris Opera. The most famous was written for Marie Taglioni ballet La Sylphide music, which was premiered on 12 March 1832 the choreography of her father Filippo Taglioni. La Sylphide is true because of her subject, which combines appearances of the supernatural with the mortal world, as the first romantic ballet music history. Despite great success, the composition ( one in 1836, composed by Herman Severin Løvenskiold music on the same topic was preferred by many choreographers later ) disappeared for more than 100 years from the repertoire of the Paris Opera and there again taken in 1972 in the program.
