Jean Spiropoulos

Jean Spiropoulos actually Ioannis Georgiou Spyropoulos (Greek Ιωάννης Σπυρόπουλος, born October 16, 1896 in Nafplio; † August 7, 1972 in Athens ) was a Greek lawyer. He was a professor of international law at the Universities of Thessaloniki and Athens, and from 1958 to 1967 as a judge of the International Court of Justice.

Life

Jean Spiropoulos was born in 1896 in Nafplio and completed his education in Hamburg, Zurich, Lausanne and Lugano. Subsequently, he studied from 1917 to 1920 at the University of Zurich and from 1921 at the University of Leipzig where he graduated in 1922 with a promotion to airspace as part of the national territory. In the same year he became an assistant at the Institute for International computing at the University of Kiel, where he served as a section chief in 1925 and two years later was a lecturer.

In 1928 he moved to a professorship of international law at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, from 1939 to 1958 he taught at the University of Athens. In addition, he taught in 1929 at the Hague Academy of International Law. From 1949 to 1957 he was a member of the International Law Commission of the United Nations. Subsequently, he worked from 1958 to 1967 as a judge at the International Court in The Hague, after he had been there previously in a case worked as an ad hoc judge. He died in 1972 in Athens.

Legal, Philosophical views

Jean Spiropoulos was coined because of his training by the German - Austrian school of thought in international law, which emphasized the importance of legal positivist principles. Nevertheless he refused an orthodox legal positivism. Instead, he headed out of the practice of government action from certain principles that he presented as general principles of law in addition to the international treaty law and customary international law.

Awards

Jean Spiropoulos was from 1950, member of the Institut de Droit International and from 1955 was also the Academy of Athens.
