Jefferson is a village in Ashtabula County, Ohio, United States. The population was 3572 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat ( county seat ) of Ashtabula County.

History

Since the establishment of Ashtabula County in 1807, is the Jefferson County Seat. The first administration building was built in 1811.

Jefferson is located on a railway line and near the Lake Erie. Nevertheless, the place grew very slowly. Around 1880, lived only about a thousand people in the village. Many local farmers bought here seed for their fields. Even in the 20th century, the population of Jefferson took to not significantly, while the neighboring towns of Ashtabula and Conneaut had a significantly larger population. Today, the population of Jefferson are even declining because many residents move to the larger towns of Ohio, because there are better earning opportunities there.

Events

Annual events in Jefferson include the Ashtabula County Fair, the Strawberry Festival, Jefferson Days, and the Covered Bridge Festival.
