Jefferson Peres

José Carpinteiro Jefferson Peres ( born March 18, 1932 in Manaus, Amazonas ( Brazil); † May 23, 2008 ) was a Brazilian politician (PDT ) and high school teachers.

Peres sat down in the 1950s for the nationalization of the Brazilian oil industry support. He was also for the preservation of the Brazilian rainforest, in particular, he was involved in the jungle of the city of Manaus and was opposed to the construction of the BR -319 through the rainforest.

In 1988, Peres was a member of the Partido Democrático Trabalhista ( Democratic Labour Party ), a center-left party, was elected to the City Council ( Vereador ) of the city of Manaus. He held this position in a second term by re-election in a time in which the Manaus million inhabitants limit exceeded until he was elected in 1995 to the Senate of Brazil.

The Senate was Peres after his election in 1995 until his death in 2008. In the presidential election of 2006 he supported the candidacy of Cristovam Buarque, he stood by as a potential vice president. However, they left with 2,538,834 votes, corresponding to a share of 2.64 %, but before the runoff from that Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva could win.

Peres was temporarily professor of economics at the Universidade Federal do Amazonas.
