Jehan Fresneau

Jehan Fresneau (also Fresnau, Frasnau, Franeau, Franier, de Frania ) (* before 1450; † after 1505) was a French composer and singer.

Life

Jehan Fresneau probably originated in Cambrai. There it is detected as petit vicaire in the financial year 1468/9. From 1470 to September 1475 he was a singer ( chapelelain ordinaire ) in the chapel of Louis XI .. Perhaps on the advice of Johannes Ockeghem went Fresneau to Milan, where he was a member of the chapel of Duke Galeazzo Maria Sforza. His most notable colleagues were Gaspar van Weerbeke, Alexander Agricola, Loyset Compère and Jean Cordier. In November 1476 sought the Duke, for Fresneau, which is described as " priest of Cambrai, our singer, and a humble and artistically rich man " to a benefice in Como. On December 26, 1476 Duke was murdered. His widow, Bona of Savoy, decided to reduce the chapel. Can not be passed employed musicians also included Fresneau. On February 6, 1477, he received a pass, who assured him and two companions from customs duty. His traveling companions were Loyset Compère and Colin de Lannoy.

Fresneau returned to France, where he found employment in the court chapel of Charles VIII. A papal bull of July 28, 1486 Fresneau mentioned as one of the cantores - Capellan of the French king and owner of a Kanonikats at Saint -Martin de Tours, where Johannes Ockeghem held the high office of Treasurer. The cop tells the Archbishop, the Dean and Chapter of the Cathedral of Rouen, Fresneau to grant a benefice. Whether the church men the request of the Pope have obeyed, is not known.

In 1494 Fresneau was procurator of the canons of Saint -Martin at the choir school of Chartres Cathedral and became the canon and provost of Mayet. The Church of Mayet was a branch of Saint -Martin in Tours, but belonged to the diocese of Chartres. A second visit to Chartres is documented on February 9, 1500; on this occasion Fresneau was called as a notary and procurator of the ecclesiastical court. In February 1505 he was still holding on to Chartres.

The work

  • Missa quarti toni
  • C'est vous seulle
  • De vous servir (also Hayne van Ghizeghem attributed, but probably of Fresneau )
  • Ha qu'il m'ennuie (including Alexander Agricola attributed, probably from Fresneau )
  • Notre assouemen (also attributed to Alexander Agricola, probably from Fresneau )
  • Nuit et jour

The songs must be dated in the period 1475-1480. Stylistically, they are more conservative.

Fresneau was regarded by contemporaries as a composer of some stature. In the Deploration on the death of Ockeghem Johannes Guillaume Cretin writes about him: Prenez Fresneau pour vos Chantz accorder.
