Jens Pauli Heinesen

Jens Pauli Heinesen ( born November 12, 1932 in Tórshavn, Faroe Islands, † 19 July 2011) was a Faroese writer. He was one of the most prolific and most popular authors in the Faroese language.

Life

Jens Pauli, born in 1932 in Tórshavn, was the son of Petur Heinesen á Lotfi, farmer from Sandavágur, and Anna Maria Malena Heinesen, born Johannesen from Hestur. Since August 11, 1956 Heinesen was married to Maud Brimheim ( † 7 September 2005) from Klaksvík. The singer and manager Elin Heinesen is their daughter, and they also have a Korean adopted daughter.

Jens Pauli Heinesen grew up in Sandavágur. In 1952, he graduated from high school in Tórshavn and 1956 his degree as a teacher in Denmark, where he taught at first, until he came back in 1957 to the Faroe Islands. The teaching profession, he gave up in 1970 to become a writer. Already in 1968-69, he and his family a break in southern Spain, where he wrote the novel Frænir eitur Long Serpent.

Heinesen considered one of the "gentle reviver " of Faroese literature in the 50s. Was his early work of James Joyce and the Nouveau Roman influenced, he later turned to more traditional narrative, which it owes its popularity to the Faroe Islands. In addition to numerous novels and short stories, he also wrote four plays. A novel and a short story have appeared in German translation.

1968-1975 was Heinesen the chairman of the Faroese Writers' Association.

The Literature Prize of the Faroe Islands, he received four times: 1959 (round vakra kvirran ), 1969 ( Aldurnar spæla á sandi ), 1973 ( Frænir eitur Long Serpent ) and 1993 ( Bláfelli ). In 1999 he received the Mentanarvirðisløn Landsins (National Culture Prize of the Faroe Islands ).
