Jesse B. Oldendorf

Jesse Bartlett " Oley " Oldendorf ( born February 16, 1887 in Riverside, California, † April 27, 1974 in Portsmouth, Virginia) was an admiral in the U.S. Navy has been famous for his participation in the sea and air battle of Leyte Gulf.

He graduated from the Academy of U.S. naval forces ( U.S. Naval Academy) in 1909, and then served on various ships in the U.S. Navy.

In 1922 he received his first command on the destroyer Decatur he held until 1927.

After the U.S. entry into the Second World War, he was promoted to Rear Admiral ( uh), and entrusted with various missions in the Atlantic. This included, for example, the anti-submarine in the lakes area around Trinidad and command of the western Atlantic escorts.

Oldendorf changed in January 1944 in the Pacific and there commanded the 4th Kreuzerdivsion of Louisville. With his association, he supported, among others, the landing operation in the Marshall Islands.

On October 24, 1944, he placed his fleet of battleships and cruisers in the classic Crossing the T- formation in the Strait of Surigao southwest of Leyte and thus defeated the Japanese in the Battle of Surigao Strait. He was then promoted to Vice Admiral in December 1944.

In the landing maneuvers in the Gulf of Lingayen, he commanded some battleships and was wounded in the Battle of Okinawa on the Pennsylvania.

He joined in 1948 with the rank of Admiral of the active duty, according to him the destroyer Oldendorf was named. Oldendorf died on 27 April 1974 and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
