Jim Griffiths

James Griffiths ( born September 19, 1890 in Bettws, Ammanford, Carmarthenshire; † 7 August 1975 ) was a Welsh trade union official and Labour Party politician.

Biography

Griffiths, one of the leading official of the Mining Association ( Miner's Union) in South Wales was, began his political career in 1936 when he was first elected as a Labour candidate for the Members of the House. There he represented until 1970, the interests of the constituency of Llanelli.

While the Labour government of Prime Minister Clement Attlee from 1945 to 1951, he was first Social Security Minister (Minister of National Insurance ) before he was Colonial Secretary ( Secretary of State for the Colonies ). As such, he met in May 1951 with the leader of the Kenyan African Union, Jomo Kenyatta, who demanded from him a constitutional conference on the situation in Kenya and ultimately whose independence before May 1953.

As it 1955 to tensions within the Labour Party because of the different views of the two candidates for the party presidency as successor Attlee, Aneurin Bevan and Hugh Gaitskell, came Griffiths exerted a moderate influence. Griffiths was not only a strong supporter of regionalization, but also one of Hauptforderer an independent Ministry of Wales ( Welsh Office ).

After the election of the Labour Party on 16 October 1964, he was appointed by Prime Minister Harold Wilson then also the first Secretary of State for Wales to the Cabinet, where he remained until 1966.
