Jimmy Townley

James Chadwick "Jimmy" Townley ( born 2 May 1902 in Blackburn, † 1983) was an English football player and coach.

Career

Townley was born as the son of William Townley England international in Blackburn and grew due to the coaching profession of his father, mostly in Germany. Early 1920s, he played under his father at SC Victoria Hamburg and later at FC St. Gallen, before he returned in 1924 to England and, after he had failed at Chelsea in the trial, and finally in March 1925 a professional contract with Tottenham Hotspur obtained. Set back by a broken leg in October 1925, he made his Erstligadebüt until October 1, 1927 at a 1:3 home defeat against Everton. Although he distinguished himself both against Everton and in the following week at 1-2 against Cardiff City was the only scorer of his team, he was replaced by Jack Elkes and played from then on again for the reserve team. After another use toward the end of the season and participation in a series of friendlies in the Netherlands, he moved to the season break for the substantial transfer fee of £ 600 for third division side Brighton & Hove Albion.

At the start of the season still regular at Brighton, he lost this game after seven days on the fit-again from an injury Jimmy Hopkins and played no role in the episode. Prior to joining the league rivals Clapton Orient in February 1930, he came only to two other league operations. Even with Clapton he could not permanently establish itself and was released in May in 1931 from 19 league games out of his contract, after which he returned to Switzerland. There he was active for six years at FC Bern until the end of 1937, with whom he took as captain in the Mitropa Cup in 1936.

From 1945 to 1949 he was head coach of FC St. Gallen in the National League B in the season 1948/49, he led the club to promotion to the National League A. He then supervised until February 1950 FC Thun, the end of the season in the National League B descent.
