Jiří Bubla

Jiří Bubla ( born January 27, 1950 in Ústí nad Labem, Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czechoslovak ice hockey player who played for many years for the CHZ Litvinov, the Czechoslovak national team and the Vancouver Canucks on the position of the defender. His son Jiří Šlégr is also ice hockey player and played for several years in the NHL.

Career

Jiří Bubla began in 1968 his career at CHZ Litvinov, before joining the army club Dukla Jihlava 1969. This club he remained faithful to 1979 and won in 1970 and 1971 the Czechoslovak championship. Between 1971 and 1979 he played again for Litvinov. He then moved to HC Sparta Prague. Overall Bubla scored 93 goals in 470 Extraliga games. Prior to the 1981/82 season, a special NHL Draft for Czechoslovak player was performed was at the Bubla selected by the Colorado Rockies. A few weeks later gave the Rockies the NHL rights to Bubla but to the Vancouver Canucks, so that this played from the middle of the season for the Canucks. In 262 NHL games for the Canucks he scored 17 goals and 101 templates and finished his career in 1986.

Even greater success than at club level had Jiří Bubla in international championships. With the Czechoslovak Mr. selection, he won two medals at the Winter Olympics and nine medals at World Championships. His first appointment to the national team, he received the World Ice Hockey Championship in 1971 and took off this time every year participate in the World Cup. Five years later he was called into the squad for the Olympic Winter Games in 1976 and won the silver medal. 1980 was followed by another at the Olympics, he also graduated from the Canada Cup in 1976. In the national jersey he scored 37 goals in 230 international matches for Czechoslovakia.

During the Ice Hockey World Championship 1987 in Vienna Bubla was arrested and later convicted of heroin smuggling. He spent four years in an Austrian prison. Today Bubla operates a vehicle operating near Vancouver.
