Jiri

Development region

Jiri ( Nepali: जिरी Jiri ) is a mountain village ( Village Development Committee ) in the Nepalese Himalayas ( Dolakha district ). Jiri consists of only one road that leads through the village, and at the shops and the occasional guest houses are located on the left and right. The center of the village lies the coach park, where a bus ticket can be purchased on the day before the ride.

The village lies at an altitude of about 2000 meters on the slopes of a mountain. There is a road from Kathmandu to Jiri, take the daily buses from the capital in the mountain village. The journey takes about one day to complete.

The place is guarded by the Nepalese army. This means that names and passport numbers must be entered on reaching the village in a book. From here, on the way to the mountains, the area is rather under the control of Maoists. Since these avowedly attack no tourists, except for a possible Wegzoll nothing to fear.

From Jiri from an onward journey is usually possible only on foot. Outside of the rainy season, since the river is passable then, also possible to further take a bus or truck in the village Shivalaya. This way is also a way to enter the Khumbu and thus, among other things to Mount Everest. With the regular flight operations from Kathmandu to Lukla and due to the potential threat posed by the Maoists this arduous walk but has lost meaning.
