Dschiroft or Jiroft (Persian جیرفت ) is a city in the Iranian province of Kerman. It is located 230 km south of the town of Kerman and 1375 kilometers south of Tehran. Its population is 209 746. In earlier times, the name was in use Sabzewaran. The fact that the environment is very fertile, has brought her fame as a basis -e Kuchek (small - India).

Dschiroft is situated on a large level, the Halil Rud, on the southern spur of bariz mountain range and is surrounded by two rivers. The average height of the city is 650 m above the sea.

Archaeology in Dschiroft

Dschiroft was recently archaeologists known as the Iranian Cultural Organization had announced that they had discovered the remains of a millenary city or a kingdom near Dschiroft. On an archaeological site, which is just one kilometer from the center today, a predecessor town of Dschiroft is currently being explored. The Iranian experts are already talking about the Jiroft culture that represents a link between the Indus Valley Civilization and ancient Sumer in the 3rd millennium BC. Some see it as a result of the finding situation of ceramics, the mythical Aratta, referred to in the cuneiform texts of the Sumerians origin city.

A new research highlight for the region with the discovery of a cave above the town, the remains said to plant -eating people from the Stone Age contained. The site is now called Pid- Nekoupieh.
