Joachim Westphal (of Hamburg)

Joachim Westphal (* 1510 in Hamburg, † January 16, 1574 ) was a Lutheran theologian and reformer.

Life

Born the son of a poor carpenter, Westphal was able to visit St Nicholas school of his native city and later the convent school in Lüneburg by the help of wealthy neighbors. Provided with a scholarship of his native town, he studied since 1529 at the University of Wittenberg when Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon. On the recommendation of Melanchthon he is, after he had acquired the academic degree of Master of seven liberal arts on January 30, 1532 Teacher at the Johanneum. Westphal came after he had been two years vice-principal of the institution, back to Wittenberg to continue his studies, where he was also one of those at table Luther. When the plague broke out in 1535, he left Wittenberg to visit other universities.

In his study trip he visited the universities of Erfurt, Heidelberg, Strasbourg and Tübingen. They had even offered him a professorship at the University of Rostock in theology, but he succeeded by Stephan Kempe as pastor at St. Catherine's Church in his home city. On April 19 In 1541 he was introduced by Superintendent John Aepinus in his office. Though he had guided the affairs of Paul von Eitzen since 1562, he was after his final departure from Hamburg, was appointed as superintendent of Hamburg at the Hamburg Cathedral until 1571. End of the year 1573 fell upon the Lutheran theologians dispute a serious illness, to which he breathed his last at the age of 64 years.

Work

Westphal occurred during his theological work, especially since the Augsburg Interim Gnesio-Lutherans as shown. The Hamburg opinion against the Interim and Andreas Osiander are co-authored by him. He fought against the Leipzig articles and Georg Major, renewed from 1552 to the Upper case against John Calvin and Theodore Beza and dismissed the located with its refugee community on the German coast Johannes à Lasco from Hamburg.
