Joanna, Duchess of Brabant

Johanna of Brabant (* June 24, 1322; † November 1, 1406 in Brussels) was Duchess of Brabant and Limburg 1355-1406.

Life

She was the daughter of Duke Johann III. and Marie of Évreux.

She married her first husband in 1334 William of Avesnes (* 1317, X 1345 ), as William IV, Count of Holland and (as William II ) Count of Hainaut. From this marriage she had only one child, William, who died young. As a widow she married in March 1352 the much younger Wenceslas I (* 1337, † 1383 ), Count, from 1353 Duke of Luxembourg.

Her father died in December 1355th In January 1356 Blijde Inkomst was announced, the firm wrote the unity of the duchy to avoid the division between Johanna and her sisters. Johanna was the oldest duchess, while Louis of Male, Count of Flanders and husband of the younger sister Margaret did not accept the decision and Brabant attack.
