Joanna Russ

Joanna Russ ( born February 22, 1937 in New York City; † April 29, 2011 in Tucson, Arizona ) was an American author.

Life

Russ was born in 1937 in New York and grew up in the Bronx. After high school, she attended Cornell University, where she in 1967 with a BA completed. In 1970 she graduated from the Yale Drama School MFA. After Russ had taught for several years at various universities in the U.S., they got a job as a professor at the University of Washington.

As a writer Russ was particularly concerned with issues in the fields of science fiction, fantasy and feminism. Especially for her novel The Female Man by 1975, it has become known. Russ was in the late 1960s to the first series of women who enrolled in the field of science fiction and like her first novel Picnic on Paradise (German: Alyx ) was nominated for the Nebula Award. Russ lived openly lesbian.
