João de Castro

João de Castro ( born February 7, 1500 Lisbon, † June 6, 1548 in Goa) was a Portuguese commander and navigator.

Castro struggled in his early youth against the Moors, and accompanied Charles V to Tunis. 1540 he took part in the Portuguese expedition to the Red Sea and in 1545 was appointed governor of India. Here he made himself particularly by the defense of Diu against the Muslims a name. In 1548 he was charged by the Governor to Viceroy of Portuguese India.

His most interesting letters from the East Indies to the King of Portugal are kept in the library to Lisbon.

João de Castro died on June 6, 1548 in Goa.
