João Soares (politician)

João Barroso Soares ( born August 29, 1949 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese politician (PS). He was from 1995 to 2002 Mayor of Lisbon.

Life and work

João Soares was born the son of a politician Mário Soares and actress Maria Barroso. He studied law at the University of Lisbon. In 1987 he was first elected to the Partido Socialista in parliament, where he was active in the legislative periods: 1987-1991, 2002-2005, 2005-2009, 2009-2011 and since 2011 until today as a deputy.

. Prior to his election as Mayor of Lisbon, he was a town councilor for culture from 1989 to 1995 In 1995 he was elected mayor of Lisbon; it was the most important post in his political career.

Short term: he was also a member of the European parliament from 1994 until 1995. Between 2008 and 2009 he was also President of the OSCE Assembly.
