Joaquín Chapaprieta

Joaquín Chapaprieta y Torregrosa ( born October 26, 1871 in Torrevieja, † October 15, 1951 in Madrid) was a Spanish politician and Prime Minister of Spain (Presidente del Gobierno ).

Biography

Study and career

The son of a Genoese timber merchant and ship owner, who contributed significantly to the economic growth of Torrevieja and Alicante, earned his university entrance qualification ( Bachillerato ) at the Seminary of Orihuela. Then he studied law at the Universities of Madrid and Bologna.

Later, he was next to the ministers Joaquín López Puigcerver and Santiago Alba Boniface Author of recognized works to administrative proceedings as well as to finance.

In addition, he held senior positions in administration. 1903 he was appointed Director General of the asset management (Director General de Propiedades ) and later General of the State Administration (Director General de Administración ). In 1915 he was finally Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of appeals for clemency and justice. Between 1916 and 1917 he was Under Secretary in the Ministry of the Treasury.

Member of Parliament, Senator and Minister

His political career began in 1898 with the election of the Members of the Parliament of the province of Alicante. However, he was elected on May 19, 1901, as a representative of, founded by Práxedes Mateo Sagasta Liberal Party ( Partido Liberal ) MP for the Congress of Deputies ( Congreso de los Deputies ), where he of with some interruptions until 24 February in 1918 the interests Murcia and then subsequently took Granada and A Coruña.

Advance to the Prime Minister during the Second Republic

Two and a half years after the proclamation of the Second Spanish Republic, he was re-elected MP for the Congress of Deputies on 19 November 1933 where he served as a representative of the constituency Alicante until the beginning of the Spanish Civil War in July 1936. In the election of 16 February 1936, he came into office as a candidate of the Partido Independiente de Alicante Republicano.

As Treasury Secretary ( Ministro de Hacienda ) he belonged during this period from 6 May to 25 September 1935, the third cabinet of Alejandro Lerroux.

He was then as his successor, even Prime Minister of Spain (Presidente del Gobierno ), and formed a reigning until December 14, 1935 Government, in which he again took over the office of the Minister for the Treasury. As prime minister, he received the support of the Confederation of the Autonomous Right ( Confederación Española de Derechas Autónomas) and representatives of farmers substantially.

The Office of the Secretary of the Treasury he retained beyond first also in the cabinet of his successor Manuel Portela Valladares until 31 December 1935.

With the start of the Spanish Civil War, he retired from political life and later went into exile in France.
