Joaquín Costa

Joaquín Costa Martínez ( born September 14, 1846 in Monzón, † February 8, 1911 in Graus ) was a Spanish politician, lawyer, economist and historian.

Life and work

Costa studied in Huesca, Paris and Madrid. Following Costa taught at the University of Madrid, gave his point, however, in protest against the state education policy. Between 1877 and 1879 he worked as a lawyer in Cuenca and Huesca, before he returned to Madrid and cooperated in various magazines and participated in political and economic conferences. From 1892 he was increasingly active in politics, but was weakened by a progressive muscular atrophy. In 1902 he was elected as a Republican congressman.

Costa is the Generación del 98, and the intellectual current of regeneracionismo attributed. In particular, its economic and agro- political writings had sustained.

On the occasion of the centenary of his death anniversary in February 2011, many cultural events took place. The Spanish National Library organized an exhibition to Costa in the same year.
