Joaquín Samuel de Anchorena

Samuel Joaquín del Corazón de Jesús de Anchorena Riglos ( born August 20, 1876 in Buenos Aires, † July 19, 1961 ) was an Argentine lawyer, politician and mayor of the city of Buenos Aires. He exercised this office on 21 October 1910 to 24 October 1914.

Life

Joaquín Samuel de Anchorena studied at the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences of the University of Buenos Aires in 1898 and received his diploma. In 1900 he married Sara Justa Madero Arteaga, with whom he had three children. She died in 1911 and five years later he married María Enriqueta Salas Martínez, with whom he also had three children.

From May 11th 1908 to October 20, 1910 he sat in parliament for the city of Buenos Aires.

1910, during the presidency of Roque Sáenz Peña, was Anchorena mayor of the capital. During his tenure, the completion of the Parque Tres de Febrero and the associated rose garden and the opening of new city hall fell. Also, the first line of the subway of Buenos Aires was inaugurated, today's line A.

From 1916 to 1922, president of the Sociedad Rural Anchorena Argentina. In 1917 he founded the Instituto Biológico, which deals with hygiene issues in the agriculture industry. He was also twice president of the Jockey Club, 1922-1923, and from 1958 until 1959.

1961 Anchorena died in his hometown. Since 1980, organized by the Jockey Club named after him El Gran Premio Internacional Anchorena.
