Joe Cannon (soccer)

Joseph Cannon ( born January 1, 1975 in Sun Valley, Idaho) is an American football player. Since 2011 he has been goalkeeper of the Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

Career

Cannon played until 1997 for the college team of the University of California at Santa Barbara. Subsequently, he was not drafted by Major League Soccer team and therefore moved to San Diego Flash in the former A-League. After one season, he moved to the San Jose Earthquakes in the MLS.

Due to a violation of the existing ordinary goalkeeper David Kramer, Cannon played eight season games the 1999 season from the beginning. Because of his performance, he remained first-choice goalkeeper of the team and won the 2001 MLS Cup. He was named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year 2002.

Early 2003, Cannon moved to RC Lens in France. He was there but did not prevail and returned in the summer of 2003 back into the USA. The Earthquakes announced the players' rights from the Colorado Rapids.

Due to the strong performance of Scott Garlick Cannon had to sit on the bench. Coach Tim Hankinson sat Cannon but in the play- offs. As Garlick then moved to Dallas Burn at the end of the season, Cannon received his place. In the 2004 season, Cannon was one of the best goalkeepers in the MLS. He won his second Goalkeeper of the Year Award and was also appointed to the MLS Best XI.

On 1 December 2006 he was transferred to Los Angeles Galaxy. The Rapids were given for this, players Herculez Gomez and Ugo Ihemelu. His debut for the Californians he gave on April 8, 2007. Early January he was transferred for a transfer fee back to the San Jose Earthquakes. Again, he played a very good season and could hold four of six penalties. In MLS Expansion Draft 2010, he was selected by Vancouver Whitecaps, where he plays since the 2011 season.

Cannon's father is Canadian, so he could run up and for the Canadian national soccer team. But he chose the United States and debuted at June 8, 2003 against New Zealand.
