Johann Baptist Drechsler

Johann Baptist Drechsler ( born January 28, 1756 in Lichtental, now Vienna, † April 28, 1811 in Vienna ) was an Austrian painter who was best known for his flower paintings.

Life and work

Johann Baptist Drechsler was the son of the porcelain painter Josef Drechsler and his wife Maria Anna Vogt. He is 1772-1782 detectable in the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory. At the factory drawing school of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, he became in 1787 the first professor of the newly formed class of flower painting. In 1807 he became director of the Academy.

His paintings was modeled on the Dutch flower painter Jan van Huysum. Drechsler " [ ... ], the flower painting in Vienna away from the decorative style of the Baroque and towards a highly detailed naturalism. " He took great influence on the scientific illustrations of plants in the 18th century. He is considered the founder of the Viennese school of flower painting.
