Johann Baptist von Lampi the Elder

Johann Baptist Lampi the Elder Noble ( born December 31, 1751 Romeno, Bishopric of Trento, Tyrol, now Italy, † February 11, 1830 in Vienna; actually Johann Baptist Lamp) was an Austrian portrait and historical painter.

Life

Lampi first learned from his father, he was trained by his great-uncle Lorenzoni in Salzburg. In Brixen he looked at Michelangelo Unterberger and Lorenzi in Verona, where he was a member of the Academy of Arts. Here he married in 1772 his first wife Anna Maria Franchi. About Trent, where he was in 1775, his son Johann Baptist Lampi the Younger, also a painter, was born later, Rovereto, Innsbruck ( 1779-1781 ) and Klagenfurt ( 1781-1782 ), where his son Franz, also a painter, was born, he came in 1783 to Vienna. Here he was the Neighbour by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in the so-called Figaro at Domgasse 5

In Vienna he called himself now Lampi and in 1785 a member of the Vienna Academy. After he had painted a full-length portrait of the Emperor Joseph II for the Academy, he was promoted to Professor in 1786. 1787 appointed him King Stanislaus Augustus II to Warsaw. In 1791 he went to St. Petersburg, where he portrayed the imperial family of Catherine the Great. He was made an honorary member of the local Russian Academy of Arts.

1795 died Lampi's wife and son followed him to St. Petersburg. Since 1797 back in Vienna, he was raised in 1798 in the imperial knighthood with the title " Edler von ", in 1799 an honorary citizen of the city and in 1800 an honorary member of the Academy of Fine Arts. 1805 Lampi Captain 1806 Major of the Academic Legion and get in the occupation of Vienna by Napoleon as the leader of the academic corps in the rescue of works of art worthy of (1809 ). In 1807 he married his second wife Juliana regini. After 1820 the school received Academy Award, in 1822 he went into retirement. His second wife died in 1829, he himself a year later. He was buried in the Währinger local cemetery and later received an honorary grave in Vienna's Central Cemetery (Group 0, number 1, number 8). 1875 Lampigasse was named after him in Vienna.

In 1875 (2nd district) was named the Lampigasse after him in Vienna Leopoldstadt.

Performance

Lampi was one of the best portrait painter of his time. His muted color scheme gave the personalities of the nobility represented an aura of unapproachable and spiritualized. He succeeded the late Baroque- classicist Adelsportät to the bourgeois portrait of the early 19th century to be an excellent human performer. The great painters of the Biedermeier period, as Ferdinand Georg Müller forest or Peter Fendi, had him as a teacher. His paintings can be seen today in museums in Vienna and Austria, but also in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.
