Johann Büttikofer

Johann Büttikofer ( born August 9, 1850 in Ranflüh, † June 24, 1927 in Bern ) was a Swiss zoologist.

After studying biology at the University of Bern in 1879 he took a position at the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke History in Leiden and worked from 1884 to 1897 as its curator. He made two trips to Liberia, the first from 1879 to 1882 and the second from 1886 to 1887. Between 1893 and 1894 he accompanied the expedition of Anton Willem Nieuwenhuis into the interior of Borneo. Between 1897 and 1924 he was Director of the Zoological Gardens of Rotterdam, and he spent his life in Bern.

1895 Büttikofer received an honorary doctorate from the University of Bern.
