Johann Hermann

Johann Hermann ( born December 31, 1738 in Barr, † October 4, 1800 in Strasbourg ), in French Jean Hermann, was a French physician, naturalist, zoologist and author.

Johann Hermann studied at the University of Strasbourg. His degree in medicine in 1763, he completed successfully. Five years later he was appointed professor of medicine. Another appointment as professor of philosophy, he received in 1778. Besides medicine and philosophy, he taught pathology, botany and chemistry in three languages ​​( German, Latin and French). In his most important work Tabula affinitatum animalium, which appeared in 1783, he introduced his own system of relationships between species in detail. In this work he described as first black breast rowing Bunting ( Arremon Taciturnus ).

1804 bought the city of Strasbourg in addition to its extensive mineral collection more collections and works of Johann Hermann and handed them to the Zoological Museum of the City of Strasbourg. This was refounded in 1890 as part of the Reich University of Strasbourg and moved into a new building; Separate facilities for Hermann's collections were established.

According to him, the Hermann's Tortoise (Testudo hermanni ) was named.
