Johann Karl Burckhardt

Johann Karl Burckhardt ( born April 30, 1773 in Leipzig, † June 22, 1825 in Paris) was a German astronomer.

Life

Burckhardt studied at the University of Leipzig mathematics and astronomy and later came to Zach at the observatory Gotha, where he took as an adjunct practical training in the observation of the sky. Zach recommended him 1797 Lalande in Paris, where Burckhardt particularly involved in the calculation of the orbits of comets. Burckhardt was adjunct to the Paris office and length received the French naturalization letter on December 20, 1799 as a French citizen.

After the death of Lalande in 1807 was Burckhardt astronomer at the observatory of the Military School of Paris. His 1812 published lunar tables were long considered the best of his time. In 1817 he published tables of the prime factors of all natural numbers less than 3,000,000.

The lunar crater Burckhardt is named after him.
