Johann Ludwig Christ

Johann Ludwig Christian ( born October 18, 1739 Öhringen, † November 19, 1813 in Kronberg im Taunus) was a German priest, fruit cultivation expert and entomologist.

Christ was the son of a royal scribe in Öhringen and studied in Tübingen, Erlangen and Altdorf theology, but also ran mathematical sciences. As a preacher he was from 1764 in the now part of Frankfurt Bergen operates from 1767 in Rüdigheim (now Neuberg ), 1776 in Rodheim (district of Rosbach vd Höhe ) and finally as a Lutheran pastor from 1786 until his death in Kronberg im Taunus.

In addition to his profession he worked on the theory and practice involved in different branches of agriculture, especially fruit growing and beekeeping. He owned extensive nurseries and promoted through training of small farmers, the fruit plantations in Kronberg, but also wrote a large number of writings on fruit growing. His detailed work was equally technically sound, so that they were for many years as the standard works of Pomology, as well as written practice, which they achieved a marked popularity and earned him the name "fruit pastor ". He also dealt with the technical aspects, so he invented a dehydrator oven " with zirkulirenden smoke passages " (1790 ), of which in Kronberg along the city wall, some are still preserved. In his 1791 published insects known union work he described numerous new species of Hymenoptera, such as the Gallic wasp. This work were partially first observations of living insects based on the science were previously only on the basis of collection pieces known. Christ was not only one of the most important pomologists and bee watchers of his time, but saw himself primarily as a teacher close to the people, not least in order to improve the meager incomes of small farmers. His goal was to bring the fruit growing customer the common people closer to what he ultimately succeeded with great success.

Christian died in 1813 at the typhus known as hunger disease.

A few decades after his death, was built in his honor in Kronberg a monument.
