Johann Nepomuk Czermak

Johann Nepomuk Czermak ( born June 17, 1828 in Prague, † September 16, 1873 in Leipzig) was a physiologist and founder of laryngoscopy.

Life and career

Johann Nepomuk Czermak studied medicine 1845/1846 at the University of Vienna, then in 1847 at the universities of Breslau and Prague with Jan Evangelista Purkyně and since 1849 in Würzburg, where he received his doctorate of medicine and lecturer was. During his studies, he became in 1847 a member of the old fraternity Arminia Vienna. After a fellowship at the Institute of Physiology in Prague, he was in 1855 a full professor of physiology at the University of Graz was 1856/1857 at the University of Cracow, and from 1858 to 1860 in Budapest. After the introduction of Hungarian as the language he resigned in 1860 and built its own private laboratory in Prague with a lecture hall, called Czermak'sche Spectatorium and was a professor at the University of Jena.
