Johann Wigand

Johann Wigand (* 1523 in Mansfeld, † October 21, 1587 in Liebemühl ) was a Protestant theologian and reformer.

Life

After visiting the school in Mansfeld Wigand in 1538 came to the University of Wittenberg, where he heard, among other things Luther and Melanchthon. He interrupted his education and in 1540 a teacher at the Sebaldusschule in Nuremberg. On his return to Wittenberg, he acquired on September 1, 1545 the degree of Master of Arts, in 1546 a pastor in his hometown in 1553 and superintendent in Magdeburg. Here he began on the advice of Matthias Flacius Illyricus ' (1520-1575) together with Matthias Judex to the processing of church history from a Protestant perspective. This in Basel published under the title " Historia Ecclesiastica ", broken down by centuries of work is better known as the Magdeburg Centuries.

After a stint as professor of theology at Jena Wigand went as superintendent to Wismar, where he began making botanical studies, but also together with Matthew Judex continued to work on the Centuries. On July 12, 1563 Wigand obtained his doctorate at the University of Rostock as a doctor of theology. A second effect of time in Jena ended 1573 with his dismissal and expulsion.

After brief stays in Braunschweig and Wolfenbüttel, he accepted a professorship at the University of Königsberg, where he continued the fight against Philippists.
