Johannes de Groot

John de Groot, ( born May 7, 1914 in Garrelsweer; † September 11, 1972 in Rotterdam ) was a Dutch mathematician.

Life

He studied from 1933 at the University of Groningen mathematics in the main compartment as well as physics and philosophy in the subsidiary subjects. He graduated in 1942 from the doctorate. He then worked at schools in Coevorden and The Hague as a mathematics teacher until 1946 he was a scientific service in the Mathematisch Centrum. In 1947, he gave lectures at the University of Amsterdam. The following year he was appointed professor of mathematics at the Technical University of Delft. In 1949 he married Lutgerdina Steffina Koster, with whom he had a daughter. From 1952, he held the same position at the University of Amsterdam. At the Mathematisch Centrum, he was from 1960 head of the Department of Pure Mathematics. At the University of Amsterdam, he was dean from 1964. Since then, he was no longer conducting the Mathematisch Centrum, but only an advisory capacity.

His research interests were the topology and topological groups. In 1969 he was elected member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences.
