Loppersum

( Listen? / I ) loppersum is a municipality in the Netherlands, Groningen province. It has 10,298 inhabitants ( 1 January 2013). Their total area is about 110 km ².

History

Most villages in this municipality is situated on " wierden " ( mounds ). On these, mostly raised by human hands, escape hills were the first inhabitants ( farmers and fishermen ) safe from the water of the foothills of the Wadden Sea. These mounds were created between 500 BC and the Middle Ages. Some were dug up later; on the one hand, because the soil is very fertile inside a mound because of the presence of human, animal-derived and vegetable waste; On the other hand, because treasure hunters and archaeologists in reputable sought valuable old objects. Loppersum developed because of its location close to the railway and the main road since the late 19th century to the shopping and administrative center of the municipality.

Location and economic

The municipality is located northeast of the city of Groningen, on the railway line Groningen- Delfzijl and the highway to Delfzijl. The villages Stedum and Loppersum have small stations ( 30 minute service). The municipality is located in Loppersum.
